The Electric Shift – Bus Depot South London

This project represents a flagship development for GoAhead London, setting a new benchmark for what future bus depots can achieve. It embodies a bold vision for green-powered public transport infrastructure, one that leads by example.

Located on the border between a mixed-use area of light industry and low-rise residential buildings, the site previously offered limited architectural or ecological value. Most existing structures were of poor quality, with the exception of a well-proportioned brick workshop at the rear. Biodiversity onsite was minimal, something that was addressed via the new acoustic barrier, which would green over time.

The proposed scheme retains the site’s industrial function while transforming it into a strategically positioned hub for the next generation of public transport. Designed to support a fully electric fleet, the depot plays a vital role in accelerating the transition away from fossil fuels in line with the client’s environmental aspirations. Large-scale charging capacity is essential to meet the pace of EV bus adoption, and the site represents a key urban node.

Architecturally, the design preserves the one characterful existing building but includes substantial internal reconfiguration and retrofitting for increased flexibility, employee welfare, and thermal performance. The dilapidated structures nearing the end of their lifespan are replaced with a cleanly detailed, thermally efficient workshop building, continuing open and adaptable space. The majority of the site is cleared and repurposed, now dedicated to bus charging and circulation.
